Nothing is happening now.

Everything you see is old light arriving late. And according to relativity, “right now” is not even a thing the whole universe can agree on. Let’s ruin a perfectly useful word.

Vision is memory pretending to be live.

Light is obscenely fast—exactly 299,792,458 meters per second in vacuum. It is not infinitely fast. That tiny distinction means every act of seeing is an act of looking backward.

02 // The delay machine

How old is what you see?

Move the observer from the width of a coffee cup to the edge of the observable universe. The instrument reports the age of the arriving light—not the age of the object.

Your room is already a time machine.

The face across the table
At two meters away, you see someone roughly 6.7 nanoseconds ago. Their expression reaches you before your neurons finish pretending the feed is live.
Your reflection is older than you
Mirror light makes a round trip. Stand one meter away and the face looking back is about 6.7 nanoseconds younger than the face being disappointed by it.
The Sun could disappear and you would keep the daylight
Sunlight takes about 8 minutes 19 seconds to cross one astronomical unit. The same delay applies to changes in its gravity; relativity does not send spoiler alerts.
A telescope is a controlled haunting
Andromeda appears roughly 2.5 million years in the past. Astronomy is not looking far away. It is excavating time with glass.

04 // The larger betrayal

There is no universal now.

Light delay is merely inconvenient. Special relativity is less polite: observers moving relative to each other slice spacetime into different sets of simultaneous events.

Traveler velocity

Across a separation of one light-year, that is how far the traveler’s “now” tilts relative to yours.

Nobody is seeing incorrectly. Nobody owns the official present. Spacetime keeps the receipts and refuses to appoint a manager.

The least wrong conclusion

There is no now.
There is only here.

The present is local: a small event where you are, surrounded by a universe arriving at different ages and described by observers who legitimately disagree about what is simultaneous.
